Hi.

50i is 25fps (PAL) with "interlaced" fields...... so you aren't doing anything wrong at all.
Interlaced images require 2 x partial frames (odd-lines, then even-lines) to make up a single full image frame.  It's used mainly for broadcast transmission reasons so not so much data was packed into an image all at once.  Your software knows what 50i is and creates the correct setting for it.

If you are trying to capture high-speed (for slow-motion replay) then you need to use a 50p setting or higher (p=progressive or complete image with all the data as a single frame).

The speed options available will depend on your camera and capture format (eg PAL 1080p @ 25fps, 50fps or 720p @ 100fps, where NTSC mode will likely be 1080p @ 30fps, 60fps or 720p @120fps)
Hope that helps.

BTW, my boss is french too... but I forgave him for that a long time ago.......        :D      :P
