Sony A7 II which 24-70 to choose?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am considering replacing my 28-70 kit lens with a 24-70. Being on a limited budget (< 1.000 euro) my shortlist is: the Sony/Zeiss 24-70 f4, Tamron 24-70 f2.8, Tokina 24-70 f2.8 (both with adapter) or Sigma 24-105 f4 with MC-11. I tested Sony/Zeiss which is the most balanced choice but on the edges not a strong perfomer and the Sigma 24-105 f4, sharp but bulky and not exceptional in performance and the Tokina 24-70 which is supersharp but a real heavy weight. The Tamron I did not have the chance to try. Anyone thoughts on this? Thanks for the advice!

"Any thoughts on this ?" you ask .... OK here

are my thoughts on this. IMNSHO these are not

merely thoughts, but are insights:

Over time, many lenses have followed me home,

and few, if any, have wandered away. My own

a7-II sometimes wears:

24-70/4.0

28-70/2.8

28-105/3.5-4.5

28-135/4.0-4.5

And it seems to make very little difference which

lens I choose when I pack a kit, or just when I go

with just a minimal one-lens approach. IOW there

are really no wrong choices :-)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Only your own personal priorities can decide this.

Bulk and weight ? Doesn't bother every user but

bugs the shidt outa some.

"Exceptional" IQ vs "edge problems" ? This can

be a practical concern for some types of work or

just  "bragging rights" for the owner.

Budget ? Two things here. It's simply very typical

to set a budget but then exceed it. The 2nd thing

about budget is TIME. "Time is money" ? While

that is true, it's true in many ways. Patient buyers

will find clearance items, open box specials, etc.

But some purchases have deadlines, such that a

shortage of time COSTS you money.

Clearly you have not run a forum search, as you

are repeating ... almost verbatim ... verrry recent

discussion. And if you would read that stuff, you

will see all the advice you seek already written in

the threads. AND ! You will see that buyers' final

choices, often as not, are scarcely related to the

advice given ... due to: 1. Serendipity and 2. Self

Deception and 3. The Marketplace and 4. "Etc" !

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You will buy whatever all these factors leads you

to buy. Maybe something not even on your list !

And whatever you buy will serve you well as all

the midrange zooms are excellent and it matters

not that some are a bit more excellent and some

are a bit less. It's pretty level field.

No other person knows your priorities. You have

not posted about your priorities but some can be

inferred: You mention budget, you mention IQ,

you mention bulk /weight. Those three alone are

nothing to work with. We ALL juggle those things

in every purchase. And we all arrive at a choice

according to how we WEIGHT our priorities, and

also according to how dishonest we are about

our REAL priorities :-)
