A7ii v4.00 FINDER/MONITOR custom button?

Recommended Posts

Can the FINDER/MONITOR setting be assigned to a custom button on an A7ii with v4.00 firmware?

This SAR post last week gave me the impression that I would be able to switch live view display between VF and rear panel.

On Tuesday B&H had a used item at low price so I decided to upgrade. This feature is important enough to me.

The camera arrived yesterday evening but I cannot find what I wanted. Can someone please confirm if I misunderstood?

To be clear, I want to be able to quickly switch the camera between using the only the EVF or only the LCD. Quickly means not using the menus, i.e. a custom button.

I'm inclined to return the A7ii and keep the A7 if I can't. Otherwise I'll put the A7 on ebay.

Hi adwb, I also don't see why not. Yet it seems to be the case.

I have an A7ii with v4.00 since yesterday evening and I can't find this assignment but this isn't conclusive because there's a lot of stuff I don't understand or can't find in menus.

Manuals for A7Rii and A7ii support the bad news but that too is not conclusive since I'm not sure the online manuals were updated since v4.00.

Ok in the options for the buttons, if you see "finder/monitor sel" , then that's the one to use .

Also set the menu setting finder/monitors hold then be set to manual for monitor , then if you have the button set it will change between the two when pushed but the ir eye sensor is disabled on top of the evf

There are 60 options to choose for Custom Button 2 but I'm pretty sure none of them is FINDER/MONITOR. I've been through it many times now.

Disappointing.

I should instead make a small laminated cheat sheet showing the coordinates of the menu items I use to keep in my pocket.

"Live View Display" is simply the user's ability to choose

what information the live view display includes. Before

FW4.0 one had to navigate to the menu area where such

choices are made. Presumably, FW4.0 will more directly

get you to that area so you are free to be more fickle and

change more easily what data surrounds the image in

the monitor. This has NOTHING to do with flipping back

and forth between EVF and the rear LCD monitor.

The new FW lacks the most obvious solution ...

what other camera makers call the "My Menu",

or something similar to that. It's a quick access

menu that you populate with direct links to the

things you often need but are fiendishly buried

3 menu layers down in some place you never

can remember.

And, no, a "My Menu" is NOT the same as the

"Fn" button or the "Q" button. Cameras with a

"My Menu" also have the "Fn" and the "Q".

If the Fn function encompasses frequently used settings then an additional 'My Menu' becomes redundant.  After all, the general goal is simplicity.

Nikon 700 series have three my menus.  Boy, is it a jungle!

But all I wanted was this:

Just that. But without needing to buy an A7Rii to get it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I programmed that function into one of the back controls long ago. at first I tried the AF/AEL button, but keep setting the camera into a different mode. Now i have programmed into the down button on the wheel. I also applied one of those dark dot things the light sensor under the eye cup. that works pretty good most of the time.

Hi Username, yes, that's my conclusion too. Sending the A7ii back tomorrow.

You might be amused by this... coordinates of things that should be easy to access but aren't.

Amused ? Nope .....

INSPIRED ? Oh yaz !

Many of my devices have added markings to

remind me, warn me, direct me, etc. I buy a

lotta cheap primary color white, black, yellow

and red nail polish toward that end ... altho I

have yet to actually spell stuff out in text :-)

  • 2 years later...

2 years have passed and it's now August of 2019 and the situation has not improved with Firmware version 4.01. As thefsb has stated in the original post in June of 2017, it would make so much sense to be able to quickly switch between Finder and Monitor manually. I sometimes want to use the Finder and sometimes the Monitor but when I set this to AUTO then sometimes the Monitor switches already just because I have the camera too close to my body...

    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
