External battery for sony a series

Recommended Posts

I have an A7II and have been happy with the external power setup I purchased last year. I opted for a 23,000mAh power bank and a regulated dummy battery (I didn't want to trust the camera to down grade the incoming voltage).

Here's what I'm using:

At 23,000 mAh the power bank gives me the equivalent of 22 1020mAh NP-FW50 batteries.

Both the power bank and regulated dummy battery can be had for $118. As a bonus the power bank comes with a load of adapters that allow for powering / charging just about anything you can think of with a barrel jack port as well as USB. In addition, with a female to female adapter you can have unlimited power by connecting the dummy battery to a 12v wall (mains) power supply.

Depending upon on what or how I'm shooting, I'll tack this to my rig or place it in my pocket as a tether. Modified the dummy battery cable. Short for rig or camera mounting like pictured here. Quick connect longer cable for pocket carry. If I'm running with an external monitor I power them both off the same battery. With the NP-F750 battery (shown) I can get a solid 3 hours continuous running camera, monitor, and rear screen lit. Maybe 2 hours longer on a 960 battery but can't be certain because I have yet to run out of juice on any shoot.
