A7Rii Doesn't Want to Focus Anymore...Sorta...

Recommended Posts

Good morning!

I made the jump from Canon to Sony a while back with an a6300 and loved it so much that I decided to rent an A7Rii with a Sony 35mm f/1.4 lens to use during my wife's graduation festivities this weekend.

LOVING the images out of it, but I'm having two MAJOR problems with it that I can't figure out and I'm hoping someone here could help me out.

1 - It suddenly decided it doesn't want to focus anymore...sorta.  I can put it in any of the AF modes and half-pressing the shutter button doesn't do anything.  It DID for a while, then it stopped and I have no idea why.  At one point, I thought the focusing motor in the lens died so I put it on my a6300 (which looked pretty funny) to test it and it worked fine.  My a6300 kit lens didn't work correctly on the A7Rii, either.  I'm sure I tweaked some setting I didn't mean to somewhere or something, but I have NO IDEA how to fix it.  I've tried everything I can think of.  Can any of your help me out with this?  I'd even be ok just factory resetting the camera if need be.  I just need this thing to work as I'm one of those weirdos that isn't a fan of back button focusing.

2 - The EVF/screen aren't showing exposure changes.  I can adjust ISO, aperture and/or shutter speed and the EVF/screen aren't reflecting the changes and always look the same.  I discovered this by taking a few shots only to discover upon importing them into Lightroom that they're SUPER dark!  I can deal with this...just pay more attention to settings and lean on the histogram more than I usually do, but it's kind of annoying.  Is there a setting to change it?  I'd really like the EVF and screen to show me what my pictures will actually look like...

Any help appreciated!  Thank you!!

1 check you have not moved the lever on the back to the top and pressed the centre button and  engaged manual focus if its set to stay in manual a second press will get it out but moving the lever will not!

2 go to menu_gearwheel_#3_2 live view display make sure it is set to on

try that first and see what happens

Beat me to it. The only thing I'd add is make sure >Camera Icon> #3 > Focus Settings isn't set to MF (may be obvious but hey ho)

IIRC [yeah, "if" ... but I am pretty sure of this]:

In my a7-II [non-'R'], setting BBAF is a two-step. One is to assign

AF to a back button, the other is to disengage AF from the shutter

button. This is unlike, frinstintz, my Nikon where assigning the AF

to some other button automatically disengages AF from the shutter

button. Soooo .... it's possible, in messing around with my A7-II, to

disengage AF from the shutter button without assigning AF to any

other button .... thus toadally defeating AF. It is also possible [and

pointless] to assign AF to a back button without disengaging AF

from the shutter button .... thus either the back button OR shutter

will activate the AF.
