Wrong focus

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm not English so forgive me for the bad grammar.

I started to use the a5100 a few weeks ago (kitlens 16-50) Made some nice pictures but i encountered some (i think beginners) problems when zooming in.

I put some pictures in this post and i hope someone can tell me what's happening. I know that a different zoom/macrolens will be better but maybe i can do something to reverse the focus a seen on the pictures.

When i made this pictures (the macro icon did appear) i kept touching the screen on the blurred spot(s). I noticed it tried to focus on it but id did not became clear. Even zooming (mf) out or moving backwards did not made it clear untill i was far away so it wasn't really macro any more.

I'm looking around for some additional lenses but curious if this "problem" could be solved.

Thank you for your help.

dear Etienne,

focus and touchscreen problems with the 5100 are often talked about. Please check this link to give you some ideas about changing the settings esp focus area and metering mode. It may also be that you are still a tad too close to the object. How far away did you move? Instead of using the touchscreen, did you try to defocus (tilt the camera to another object) and then refocus on the desired object? Just thoughts and ideas i encountered myself.

Sometimes the arrangement of the subject matter itself

requires manual focus. Your sample images are of that

category. AF is just a robot ... it knows nothing about the

intentions of the user. Actually, by use of algorithms AF

sometimes "thinks" it "knows" your intentions but when

your intentions do not match the algorithms, you end up

with wrong focus, like the samples you posted.

Also be careful about which AF mode you use. AF-C is

gonna be trouble for such images as you posted. And if

you use AF-S, be careful not to let small body motions

alter your subject distance after the AF-S locks on.

It is possible that the subject you are attempting to photograph is too close to the lens. If your lens is the power zoom, then the minimum focus distance is somewhere between 25 and 30 centimetres. Anything closer than that cannot be focused.

Hello there, thank you all for your answers. I think it's a combination of different things you named.

I think the distance is indeed to close. I'm used to mobile photography with a 15x macro lens what will create the picture i added from ice.

So with this sony camera i will get to the same distance as with the phone. But i need a special macro lens for it to create this with the Sony i guess. And then there are the different AF modes that play along and which i have to try out.

Thank you @Inkisliquid for the link, i will read that.

I think you were too close. A cheap and good way to do macro is to buy extension tubes. They start around €/$ 50 and will enable you to take sharp close ups. They will work with the kitlens.

Agree. Probably too close with kit lens. Fotodiox makes a decent set of extension tubes that can allow you to do macro work. Would also try to focus manually using peak focusing rather than having the camera do it for you. You will get better macro results.

    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
