HELP! Need a lens hood for Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM (orig. version or SSMII)

Recommended Posts

I have search far and wide. Every website, Sony authorized retailer, Sony authorized repair shop, Sony lens parts supplier, eBay, etc... I have spent weeks searching for a Lens hood for my 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM (Or SSMII). Sony told me they don't make them anymore... To that I asked... "Sony currently manufactures this lens and it comes with this lens hood but Sony doesn't make them anymore"? The guy replied, "what do you mean". REALLY?  It's not like Im asking for some special internal parts for a 10yr old lens. At this point I will lose my mind if I get a referral on where to buy one because I guarantee I have checked there.

By the way, I have 2 of these Identical lenses and 1 hood. So I got the part number (ALC-SH101) from my hood, search for it online and found one in Adorama's used department. Without hesitation I ordered it, rush shipped it, got it yesterday and it's the wrong one! Sony told me there are several different lens hoods that have the same part #...  WOW I'm speechless!

Any suggestions or or does anybody have one they want to sell???

That's definitely the right hood for that lens, ALC-SH101. I guess the hood size would be based on th filter diameter.

There is a list of all their lens hoods here : if you click on each one it shows diameter etc, so you may be able to find a different model number with the same dimensions as the broken hood

Hate those rigid hoods..why not spend $5.00 and get a collapsible rubber screw in lens hood?  Just as effective and protects the lens better than a rigid hood.

I've tried many others. They are either to wide or they show up in the pict / vignette. And this OEM hood goes behind any filters onto the lens itself as opposed to the lens filter-threads. After market hoods attach or screw onto the lens threads or your filters thereby putting it out in front of the glass.

Yep it's on this link! Unfortunately its not available yet, as were all of them on the page. Looks like Sony found a new contractor to start making them. And they look plastic, the OEM is aluminum but thats fine with me. And yes it does go by the filter diameter but also the mm or focal length because there are several different lenses (wide & telephoto) that have the same filter size. THANK YOU for the link, I signed up to be notified when they become available.

Can you show pics of the 2 hoods you have ?

I would be more inclined to think one was wrongly numbered

In theory, most of the petal shaped Zeiss hoods i have seen were a combo of metal and plastics. The one you show seems to be only plastic

I am really surprised that they made a change using the same number. Don't rely on Sony people to know about this !!!!

I have 2 lenses but only one hood pictured above. (I need another) It is made of metal & Plastic. The post from member "LiveShots" has a link with the correct hood, however it and all the other products on the page say "coming soon"... And they all look like plastic only: http://www.sony.com/...ries/lens-hoods

  • 2 weeks later...

I recently purchased a used SAL2470 f/2.8Z off eBay. The seller said the hood worked but was a little difficult to put on. He was right about that. Like you, I searched for a new one but could find nothing. Then I took a closer look at the hood. There are 2 small cracks that cause the hood's shape to slightly collapse become a slight oval shape instead of a circle. The narrow side was interfering with the threads. So, I filed the interference away but not so much that it wouldn't attach. Hey, as a sailor would say, "...any port in a storm!" ;)

This hood has always been rare and expensive. It's a bit weird as it goes with the standard lens for the A Mount system.

Hope Sony starts stocking them again or that you'll find a used one.
