replacing a stolen camera- a7r and lenses or a7rii and a lens?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thanks in advance for anyone that responds to this.  I just recently had my a7r stolen, I had it for almost a year, and was very happy with it for my shooting purposes.  As well as the camera, the only 2 lenses I had invested in were stolen( rokinon 14mm and sony 50mm macro) so im starting all over from scratch. 90% of my shooting is landscapes while backpacking( mostly in the Sierra Nevada mtns) and in my free time at home in san diego as well as nightscape and astrophotography.  I am getting a insurance check that will be going towards a new camera and lens(s).  My question being since it is not that drastic of a jump from 36 -42 mpx (and since I use a tripod for 90% of my shooting so the ibis while cool not a necessity) is the difference between the 2 in actual real world performance (i know on paper its better) for my type of application really worth the extra $1000 if bought new for the a7rii. With the insurance check and other money I have to spend, i will have about $4500 to drop.  While the a7rii looks impressive on paper, would that really be the best route? From what I have researched an a7rii used is about $2500 new $2900 which lets me get 1 really good lens like a 90mm macro, 55mm 1.8, or 21mm loxia and something like the rokinon 14mm or 24mm, or I can get the a7r used for like $1300 or new $1800 and get pretty much all those lenses listed.   So do I get the newsest, bestest, baddest version of the a7r and 1 quality lens, or do I replace what I had with a new 1 or at least a really good used 1 and drop the rest on a bunch of good glass?

I personally would upgrade the body.  I have owned both models, prefer the increased resolution of the II.  Perhaps more importantly, it will hold its value, I believe, better than the A7r.  It may have issues with ? shutter shock although it is controversial whether this is real or not.  However it is enough of a story out there to influence resale value.  As to lenses, I have owned or tried most of them and for my taste and use I would rank them in this order:

1.  50mm Zeiss 1.4   an amazing lenses superior to the other 50mm 55mm options.  If I could only keep one of my lenses, this would be my choice.

2.  35mm Zeiss 2.8   a terrific lens, tiny and very sharp.

3.  90mm Macro  for my needs more versatile than the Batis 85mm which I used for about a month.

4.  28-70 2.8  wonderful near prime quality at all focal lengths

5.  70-200 F4.0  Very sharp and given its zoom range light (compared to the 2.8)

6.  16-35 f4  I just don't use this heavy but excellent lens enough.
