Exposing S-Log2 for the Sony LUT. Not What I Expected.

Recommended Posts

I have been testing in depth the A7 exposure, ETTR or not and where to have the histogram, for use with the SONY S-Log2 LUT as found standard with DaVinci Resolve, and what I found is much different from the three and a half stops over and histogram to the right philosophy I hear everywhere. For my tests I was shooting outside in bright light and using center weighted metering because I had a lot of sky.

Applying the Sony LUT in DaVinci Resolve to many S-Log2 clips shot is many varying combinations of exposure and zebra and histogram readings I found - and I'm not preaching this as I'm looking for responses - but I found the normal exposure as the camera choses in full auto mode gives the best picture when used in conjunction with the Sony LUT, even when the histogram for such exposure is in the 50-60% range.

I found by over-exposing by more than one stop I lost color information with no gain in highlight detail. It made grading easy just using the Sony LUT and the X-rite color match.
