Extending reach of sony telezoom lenses for a6000 or alternatives.

An Olympus TCON-17X teleconverter attached to the Sony 55-210 lens

will get you to a 35mm equivalent of 535mm (210x1.5x1.7). You will need

a 49mm to 55mm step-up ring to attach the teleconverter.

That is NOT a teleconverter. It's an auxilliary front mounted cell.

And a rather silly example of its genre. It has a long empty tube

between its glass and its mounting ring ... to allow space for a

dinky collapsible zoom to extend into. You'll get a better image

just by cropping than by using the Olympus thing.

Also, the OP indicates need of a 500 to 600mm FL. There is no

mention of a crop factor. So delete that "1.5x" from the equation

and the reality is only 350mm. He did say that he could settle

for only 400mm, but there are strong reasons [below] against

using an auxilliary front cell.

Optically I'd hate to rely on a front component to achieve 1.7X,

and I'm no IQ geek. It's a toy device for a 7MP Point and Shoot.

The bigger problem is the weight of a front component on a lens

whose front cell moves in and out. It's not a hydraulic jack ... it's

a lightweight plastic lens. And even if one is willing to sacrifice

the 55-210, there is no realistic way to put such an over-length

and front-heavy monstrosity on a tripod.  Forget it.

When you get right down to it, the 55-210 is designed to be used

"as-is". It slows to f/6.3. It's physically long but has no tripod ring,

leaving you to use it in-hand relying on the OSS. But it's a really

good lens for its intended application !

Thanks for the responses!!! I have read the questions and reviews for this extender. Most are positive so long as you stay away from the 55-100 zoom range. For relatively infrequent use and it's low price it might work out for me. It is certainly a lot cheaper than the 400 (600mm) equivalent f4 sony lens at around $2000. This rig costs only $130 plus adaptor ring and tax. I generally support the telephoto lens when I shoot so I don't think it will damage it. If it doesn't work well I can always return it to amazon, and keep on looking for a way to solve my problem.

Note that the crop factor of the a6000 really is 1.5 so the net zoom of this contraption is 1.5x1.7x210=535.5mm

Let us know how it works out if you go ahead with this solution.  I personally think the results are likely to be dismal, otherwise everyone on the planet would spend the $130 and have a super telephoto.  This is very likely to be one of those instances where you get what you pay for.

Hi,
I received the Olympus 1.4 extender today from Amazon and carefully unwrapped it. It's in perfect condition. I mounted it in front of the 55-210 Sony zoomer and knocked off about a dozen shots. Each shot looked sharply focused with no apparent color aberration. So far, it's a winner!! Next I put the RAW images through adobe RAW and PS. The images in jpg are fine. I am one happy guy.

I would like to attach some of the image examples without putting them on my website. How???

Is there a extender/adaptor to increase the 55-220 kit lens or 18-200 to about 400mm, with fast auto focus. If not a sony product, what? Actually I need a net of 500-600 mm reach at about f8.

Sony does not make an adapter/extender for these lenses. Other option is to purchase new FE GM 100-400 (pricey). It is full frame. For your camera, it would have equivalent of 150-600. Also can purchase Sony LA4 adapter and buy appropriate A mount lens (new or used) or Tamron 150-600 in Sony A mount (new lens).
