I have a Sony alpha-58 with stock lenses(18-55mm and 50-200mm zoom lenses).

Now i am considering buying a prime lens and i found these 2:

1. 30mm f/2.8(SAL30M28)

2. 35mm f/1.8(SAL35F18)

Can someone recommend me one?

Also first one says its a macro lens how is it different from the second?

I am open to suggestions even if its some other lens in same price range(sub 200usd).

Thanks in advance

If the 30 is a true macro lens, it will be

optically better than a fast normal lens

like the 35/1.8. There's plenty of online

schooling as to the difference between

these categories.

I have not used, nor even researched,

the 30mm "macro" but it's FL leads me

to doubt that it's of "true macro" IQ. All

serious macro lenses are of AT LEAST

the same FL as prime normals, and it's

typical that they are longer, 20 to 100%

longer, than normals.

But the 30mm may nevertheless be of

quite good IQ and have a usefully close

near-focusing range. Plus, for the price

one is not really entitled to demand that

it meet "true macro" criteria. It certainly

is a very handy general purpose FL at a

very easily digestible price  :-)

The 35/1.8 is probably the star of the "easy choice" lenses. At f1.8 it has nice blur and if you stop it down it gets very sharp and contrasty with vivid colours. The focal length of 35mm roughly corresponds to a normal lens, so it's quite useful for walking around.

The 30/2.8 is a macro but that focal length is not practical for macro work, as the working distance gets very short.
