spot focus not pure spot on a7r2? Help please.

I just rented an a7R II and some lenses so I could make a wiser purchase decision on how to upgrade from my a6000.

 

On the a6000 I can set the focus to a central point and that is what I get. When a bird is in brambles or a tree, that is how I can focus on it, ignoring the clutter around it. Sometimes I use DMF as well.

 

The a7R II, however, even when set for a central spot is using multiple little green squares inside the central, bracketed point. I can't figure out how to get a simple, small central focus point.

 

Who can steer me to a solution? Thanks in advance!

Tell the rental agent to include the user manual.  

    

I can definitely get a single fixed focus point on 

my a7-II and the "R" version should provide the 

same thing, altho the menus may vary between 

the "basic" and the "R".   

   

My cameras are so heavily personalized that it 

would be useless tell anyone else what actions 

provide what result based on my cameras, but 

the user manual was my original source of info 

so steer yourself into the manual for a solution !

C-AF? Try S-AF too

 

The small square is there, just look further along the list of modes. Also, try in S-AF mode, or DMF.

I suspect you have continuous focus selected rather than single shot auto focus.  You can adjust the size of the spot to a very tiny rectangle.

The manual is downloadable and I have it. The solution was that there is a sub menu for focus options and it is hidden in there. I just found it. It's a little more complicated than my a6000 but it's there.

You could move it into the Fn [function] Button menu for somewhat 

more convenient access. I think thaz where I put it. All my cameras 

are different, so I really don't remember all the tricks until a camera 

is actually in my hands and in use. It's partly due to different models

having different menus but also due to customizing/personalizing.  

  

Once you get your camera customized for your habits and uses, I'll 

bet you no longer remember menu pathways but just intuitively get 

what you need for various subjects and working conditions :-) Thaz 

how you know it's really personalized for YOU !   

   

I gotta admit that every now and then I have an "ultra duh" moment 

where I repeatedly try to operate camera-A as if it's camera-B :-( The 

worst case was when I put the "Back Button AF" on a front button. It's 

very ergonomic, but not very intuitive if you use several other bodies 

where the BBAF really is on a Back Button :-/ [some Nikons allow the 

front-mounted DoF-PV button to become the "BBAF" button].

do you have it set to s-af or c-af ? ton of a difference...
