Replacing Lens Bayonet Mounting Ring

Recommended Posts

Has anyone in this group replaced the bayonet mounting ring on an FE lens?  My A7rII with 70-200 attached sustained a fall.  Fortunately everything works perfectly, but since then the lens mounts with more radial play than my other lenses.  It kind of annoys me.  I thought it might be a consequence of damage from the fall and replacement rings are available on Ebay for around $30.  However removing the current ring is a challenge, the four tiny Phillips head screws are so tight that I don't want to force the issue unless that is the norm.

They're not exactly philips. They are IIRC

minicross [or something like that] and you

need the correct tool as well as a solvent

for the sealant that locks the threads. As

there is no standard as to choice of which

sealant has been applied, I'd try Goof Off

cuz it works on almost everything and cuz

acetone evaporates so fast it hardly has a

chance to do its job.

Full disclosure: I've never dismantled a lens

newer than an AI Nikkor, and would not buy

any newer lens that cost so much that it's

not simply disposable, like a Dixie Cup ....

UNLESS it's such a costly [and wonderful]

lens that paying a profession to repair it is

quite clearly worth it. IOW it's the middle

ground, value-wise, that tempts self repair.

What is Primo, Middle Value, or Dixie Cup is

relative to the user's finances, so I will not try

to assign actual dollar values. I infer by your

quandry that the lens in question is, for you,

a mid-value lens. Flip a coin ?
