Lens suggestions for A6000

Recommended Posts

I am relatively new to photography, I have recently purchased the Sony A6000 and would would be open to some suggestions for lenses.

I like shooting the stars at night, landscapes, nature (such as forests, waterfalls), and people.

I have my eye on the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens for portraits and some nice background blur.

I would like a longer lens for zooming, but the good ones are very expensive.

Would there be an older zoom lens that would be better and cheaper with an adapter, than buying new?

Zola - After having had my a6000 for a year or so if I had to choose one lens for my camera it would be the Sony SEL1670Z   It's expensive, but you can often find it used for $600-800    My camera came with two kit zooms, a long and a short one.  I purchased a 50mm, 35mm, and a 18-200 zoom.  I gave my wife a a5000 camera along with the kit zooms that came with mine.  Anyway, I seldom take my SEL1670Z off of my camera.

If you would rather not spend that kind of money right away then I would buy the short and long zooms that are considered kit lens.  That way you have the whole range.  If you want to buy some fixed length lens later then look at your pictures that you've taken with the zooms and see what length you have taken pictures with the most.  The long zoom is highly regarded, the small zoom not so much.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi. I have just joined this forum having had my A6000 just over a year. I have the 2 kit lenses and am fairly happy with them, but I am itching for a longer zoom and a better macro facility. All the good lenses are WAY outside my price range, but I have been looking at the Tamron 70 - 300 zoom and wondering if this would be a good option. It seems to have pretty good reviews, but has any one used it, and is it any better than the kit zoom?

I have had my A6000 for nearly a year. It came with the two kit lenses, but I found it irritating to have to change lenses in a hurry. (My other camera is a Canon EOS 70D, where I mainly use an 18-135 mm lens. There is no Sony E equivalent).I eventually decided on the SEL 18-200 mm lens, this is the original silver lens, not the latest, slightly smaller, black lens. I have been surprised how good this lens is, considering the large zoom range, and this lens sits on my A6000 most of the time.  For macro work, and for situations where I need the best definition, I use my Canon 100 mm macro 2.8 L lens, using a Commlite adaptor, though in most cases I find manual focusing quicker than automatic.

Hey,

if you like to make photos of stars, I can recommend the 8mm Samyang / Walimex F2.8 lens.

A low budget must have for milkyway pictures :-).

Is a fisheye lens good for astrophotography?  I've read and got the Rokinon/Samyang 12mm F2.0 for stars and seems quite good even with light pollution.

Fisheyes were invented for full sky meteorology, which

is less demanding than astro cuz ... point sources. Also

daylight meteorological work permits smaller apertures

and short shutter times. If you have a clock driven guide

scope, bully for you :-) Otherwise expect to shoot trails,

or allow for a lotta high ISO noise and the compromised

IQ that accompanies it. Nevertheless you will have fun.

Sigma also makes a 19mm f2.8 for $200. Great bang for your buck. I just got an a6000 a few months ago and got the 30mm Sigma f2.8. Very good quality lens at lower than average prices.
