Just read this comparison test of the new GM 70-200 2.8 lens vs. nikon and canon. It seems a bit troubling and makes me question whether I should go forward with my purchase of this GM lens (I'm wait listed at B&H). Am I over reacting?

Thoughts, comments

I'm happy with mine so far… bad weather is limiting my testing. I'm hoping to get out to a race-track once the weather picks up to see how fast the auto-focus is using the A6300.

I've seen enough good shots to want one, but I'm going to go through them all when my dealer gets them in and pick the best one.

There is enough variation in reviews of this lens to make me question their QC.

I hope quality didn't suffer in their rush to fill backorders.

Who knows what happened to the lens they tested. Note, Brian Smith and others mentioned it looked definately decentered it was also observed that several copies of any lens should have been involved in the test.

Having swapped from the Canon equivalent (and used a converter) I'm sure that this lens is better *on the A7R2*. Better focus and better image quality.

Comparing the A7R2 and 70-200 to my old 5DM3 + canon 70-200 is much harder, I didn't have them both at the same time.

So bottom line: if you want a 70-200 F2.8 on the Sony, get this lens.

If you have a Canikon with 70-200, it is a much harder to justify.

First shot was at 200mm F2.8 (300mm on my A6300)

This is the same image, but cropped down (a lot). I may have focused on the body rather than the head (the bird was a long ways off and moving constantly). The sharpness is there on the feathers, maybe a smaller aperture would have helped a little. So far I am happy with this lens.

You're over reacting. Many of these tests are bias against Sony. Also, they didn't even mention the model of Nikon lens they were comparing it with. They only mentioned the specs. Yes Nikon makes a similar lens for a similar price but they also make MUCH higher end lenses with the same specs but different glass.

Comparing a $2600-$3000 Sony lens with a $12,000+ Nikon lens isn't a fair comparison.

Thank you all for responding . I especially appreciated the photos taken with this lens that some of you sent. In hindsight I was over reacting to the lensrental test. Unless there is a Sony QC issue I'm confident the lens will perform as advertised. There are now 77 comments attached to that article- makes for some interesting reading. Again I appreciate all of your responses.
