Apparently improves low light focusing in some instances. Can't say that I see any difference but the update using Win7 went smoothly.

Pick the correct camera as the files are not the same ; software is in English.

Is this ok for the australian model, or is it for japanese only?

According to a photographer that seems to be well connected to Sony, Brian Smith, the upgrade is meant for japanese models and it is not advisable to use them on other ones.

I updated the A7R software a few hours ago (26 April, 4 pm in Europe) from a European site and I have now v. 1.20.

I've installed it on US model A7M2 and it works fine. No issues at all. Installs in English as OP stated.

Thats why i think il hold off until its official on  sony Aus website.

Too late for me, what difference does it make if the camera talks to itself in Japanese ,English or Esperanto?

I'm glad it has worked out for you, firmware upgrades are not something you wan't to mess up.

Unless somebody knows different JDM models have only Japanese language option....the cameras are exactly the same worldwide.

^ I presumed as much. 

But thought there was no harm enquiring anyway.

The only thing i though may be different is the power charging profile however i would need to see the schematic diagrams to know more.
