I have a question about the Focus hold button/s on some lenses.
I am not sure I am missing something here but if you use back button focusing is not letting go also focus hold ?
I can see the point if you use the shutter button to focus and I see the focus hold can via the menu be set to other functions , for example eye AF or drive mode look like sensible options.

Is there some other benefit to focus hold on the lens that I am not understanding?

If you hold the lens and camera just right, this is much more fluid/stable than using the back button. And since you don't have to use the back button, you can assign that to something else.

Its apparently (I use this button a different way) useful to quickly separate Focus and Metering, half press shutter once to focus on target, hold the focus, reframe and half press again to meter, then reframe and compete the shutter press to take the shot.
