Iris issues - my A6300 with kit lens beats A7RII with high-end lenses

Recommended Posts

As has been reported lately, the A7RII with the new 50mm, the 85mm and the GM lenses, plus at least the 55mm F/1.8 with firmware version 2 on an A7RII (and others it seems) body stops the aperture down before focusing in AF-C mode. This is a huge issue since it makes it impossible to use AF-C in (for example) dim light studio situations. For serious studio work this means that the A7RII with GM lenses and the others mentioned, has less value than a paper weight.

Yesterday night and this morning, I tried this again. I tested my A6300 with the kit lens and the A7RII with the 55mm. The results are depressing.

A7RII with 55mm

At F/3.5 I was able to use PDAF focus but at F/4 PDAF was not kicking in at all and the CDAF was hunting.

A6300 with 16-50 kit

Found focus using PDAF at any aperture setting.

This is such a serious issue that I am considering going back to Canon. Some Canon glass will stop down to F/2.8 while using AF-C, but not to F/4 or /8 as Sony does.

Uhh?

Sony stops down to the max appature of a lens. Not down to f4 etc...

The A7rIII will include the sensor technology of the a6300 and your problem will be solved. In the mean time, go back to Canon, switching to Sony still requires some adjustment of technique, unfortunately, and not everyone is capable of making that adjustment.

What adjustment is needed for Sony?

Eh, no. This has nothing to do with the sensor technology. It has to do with the camera firmware.
