A6000+la-ea2 with SAL1650 f / 2.8

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know how the SAL1650 f / 2.8 works with la- a2 adapter if your AF remains good, or else the SAL2475 f2.8 , needed a versatile lens and cheaper than the EF 24-70mm f / 2.8 GM .

i have the nex-7 and it works great with la-ea2 and 16-50 2.8 SSM, very nice lens and very fast and silent AF but a little bit bulky

so i used the KIT 18-55 (much better than KIT 16-50) more often and it has OSS and nice character, but IQ is better from the SAL

This is an excellent lens. Since it's an SSM lens it will work nicely with the LA-EA3 adapter, specifically on the A6300, A7mk2, A7Rmk2 which have PDAF on sensor. It works with the LA-EA2 & 4 but you won't get PDAF.

LA-EA2 + 4 works already with PDAF internal with 15 PD-AF point´s

SAL 16-50 is APS-C lens so for the A7 series FF cameras it work´s only in crop mode

Correct! With the LA-EA3 on the newer bodies you will get more PD focus points. Also, remember to enable PD AF in the camera's MENU system.

Hi, new to the forum here. I’m wondering if anyone here might have some insight.

I was going to post this as a new topic (a6500: LA-EA2 + SAL 16-50 f2.8 vs Commlite + EF-S 17-55 f2.8) but my question is an extension of this discussion.

I moved from a Canon 7D to a Sony a6500. Currently my beloved EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 with a Commlite adapter is my go-to walking around lens. AF is fast and accurate with this combo, and the Sony IBIS outperforms the native IS of the lens. (I also have an a6000 but PDAF performs so much better with adapted lenses on the a6500.)

Problem: I’m noticing some optical smear on the right side of the frame on the wide end when it’s adapted to the a6500 vs using it straight on the 7D. Depending on the composition it can be quite distracting. I’m thinking there are two contributing factors: 1) as others have demonstrated, adapters tend to add a certain amount of lateral blur to the corners, and 2) the Sony sensor is a bit larger than the Canon, so it is using more of the image circle — including corner areas that Canon never meant to be used.

I’m getting tired of waiting for Sony to put out a proper 16-50 f/2.8 e-mount lens (I doubt they ever will and I’m not interested in the f/4 offerings) and thought I might have better luck with the a-mount 16-50 f/2.8 and an LA-EA2 adapter, both of which are on sale (but still special order only) at my local shop. It’ll be smaller and lighter than the Canon to boot, but it’s still an adapted solution. Does anyone have experience with this combination? How well does it work, and does the image quality match the Canon (when it’s used on Canon gear)?

A second possibility would be to use a Speedbooster type adapter with a 24-70, but I suspect the optics of the adapter would detract further from the IQ. And I’m hoping to make my kit smaller and lighter, not larger and heavier.

Or am I just being stupid and I should buy the 18-105 f/4 at half the cost? (I’ll miss those extra 2mm and extra stop of light.)

Thanks

The SAL 16-50mm f2.8 is an SSM lens so it does work well on A6xxx bodies via the LA-EA3 adapter. Images are high quality! However, so are images from the E PZ 18-105mm G. This is currently one of my favorite (and thus most used) lenses on my A6300. It is a BEAST! IQ, range, convenience, smooth power zoom for video... A BEAST!! It definitely lives up to its "G" rating!

Yes, it would be great to have f2.8 but in practical use I rarely miss it! I also have an A7S, A7M2 and lots of good glass but the A6300 with the E PZ 18-105mm gets more usage (portraits, events, video) than any other combination.

Thanks Al Pha, I was just thinking that I should stop trying to use a zoom for everything and bring my fast primes when I need something better than F4. This morning I saw a photo of the SAL 16-50 f2.8 mounted on an a6000 via LA-EA3 and it looks heavy -- not much smaller than my Canon 17-55 f2.8. I'll have to think on this a bit more.

Actually, the older kitlens - SEL 18-55mm - is quite good. It's sharp with good colours and contrast. It is also much more suited to APS-C E-Mount cameras in terms of size and weight. Similarly the 16-50/2.8 is a perfect match for APS-C A-Mount cameras, but I wouldn't mix them up.
