A7R ii Blacking Out With Fotodiox Adapter and Sigma 35mm f1.4

Recommended Posts

This is my first post on this forum site. I am new to photography and have owned a couple canon dslr cameras (EOS 40D and 70D). Forgive me for my formatting.

just got a used Sony A7R ii, which worked perfectly according to the previous owner who sold it on craigslist in pristine condition with all documentation purchased from B&H.  I saw it autofocus and take pictures with his own native E-mount lens, which he was selling, albeit at a $1500 price point, and I was already a little hard pressed for cash.

I did not have a lens, so I went ahead and purchased the Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART lens with the canon EF mount. I needed some kind of adapter, so I also bought the Fotodiox Pro Lens Adapter from Amazon.

I read on this site: http://briansmith.com/sony-a7rii-canon-ef-smart-adapter-tests/ that the Fotodiox adapter should perform alright with the Sigma lens.

Once I received everything (today, May 26th), I mounted it all on and took my first picture.  Autofocus was... nonexistent.  Second shot in better light proved more promising with pretty snappy autofocus.  Then I tried to take another photo and when I pushed the shutter down, the screen turned true black and then the "artificial black" for about 5 seconds.  When it returned to normal, there was an audible "clicking" or "readjusting" of the whole system.  I took the lens and adapter off, put on the lens cap, and I was firing away normally, so it leads me to believe that the lens or adapter is causing some kind of lag.  This happens in both manual and autofocus modes.  It seems to happen randomly, but it happens more than 75% the times I have tried to take photos.  It also happened a couple times when I pressed the shutter half-way.

I also thought it could be my SD Card.  I am using an old SDHC I SanDisk Ultra 30 mb/s 8gb card.  I have a 64gb Lexar 1000x 64gb U3 card coming in a couple days from Amazon.

  • 6 months later...

im having issues with my a7r2 and fotodiox too...

i don't have the sigma 35 art, but with original canon glass im having a lot of troubles...

the major problem to me is that when i try to select 24fps on video mode de camera freezes...

does this happened to you too? please test it...

if it happens, i think we should leave the fotodiox and go to metabones or something more reliable...

best!

    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
