Is it possible to assign a button for fast monitor/EVF switch on A7II?

Recommended Posts

Not sure about the a7ii but this is with the a7rii. It's called MONITOR/FINDER (not sure which page it's on) and simply swaps between them with an assigned button. In image review mode it still is a delete button (the one I assigned it to) which occasionally trips me up.

The a7II is very sensitiv by changing from screen to viewfinder (10 to 12 cm).

If you covering half of the sensor (3 mm height, 5 mm wide) with LightDims the sensitivity changes to more or less 3cm.

This is exactly what you need. Coming with your eyes near to the viewfinder the screen changes to viewfinder.

The best way to stop the super sensitivity.

I'm pretty sure about the basic a7-II not sharing this from the a7R-II.

It's something I looked all thru the menus to find ... with no success.

I also have an a3000 which totally LACKS auto switching of the view.

It has a toggle button right on the side of the EVF hump. It's a cheap

camera with limited features, but tome that button is a great feature !

Concerning the basic A7-II, hopefully this is just a matter of firmware

and Sony will share the a7R-II down to the basic a7-II. I do not install

regular firmware upgrades. I don't use the latest lenses or other new

accessories, so updates don't offer me anything ... unless some day

Sony offers that EVF-to-Monitor toggle feature in an upgrade.

To me, my a7-II is more or less an old Leica CL or a Contax G2 that

uses a sensor instead of film. Singular exception to that approach is

the IBIS. The older a7 [not Mk-II] would be more similar to the Leica

CL or Contax G2 cuz those oldies had no image stabilization, but I've

no regrets about ignoring the temptingly low clearance pricing on the

a7 and shelling out for the Mk-II, solely to have IBIS. Other than that

exception, I don't even have any AF with my a7-II, due to my ancient

lenses. My flashes are equally ancient. And I am more ancient than

any of my stuff. I didn't shop for vintage stuff. I'm still using my old

gear from the 1970s - 80s, but I just needed a "digital film holder" to

replace my old analog film holders.

Has anyone who has already reduced the sensitivity of the

Auto EVF-Monitor switching found that it's an unhappy

compromise ?

I am annoyed by the sensitivity same as others are. But in

a not toadally rare usage, I find the EVF blanking out [cuz

the automation has switched over to Monitor]. It's entirely

possible that this flukey effect is limited to a subset of users

like myself, who wear glasses AND are left-eye-dominant.

The semi-rare usage that leaves my left eye looking into a

blacked out EVF is when shooting in portrait format at odd

angles [steeply downward seems worst]. The human neck

only angles just so far, so for odd angled views the camera

body also angles away from my face a bit. That separation

from my face, plus the distance added by wearing glasses,

and being left-eyed, breaks the reflection path from the auto

switching thingy, so it doesn't know my eye is there and so

the finder goes dark !

Any left-eyed bespectacled shooters of odd angle views out

there ? If so [big IF there], do you ever experience this ? Not

like I'll be sooprise to hear that I'm all alone on this. It's not

easy being me ...

Truly mind boggling that Sony still refuses to address this issue at this late date.  Other makers allow you to reduce the sensitivity; is Sony too incompetent? Not even the ability to assign a button like on the a7rII??? Shameful.
