A7RII - Red dot in LCD screen and EVF

Recommended Posts

Hi,

yesterday I noticed for the first time a red dot in the middle left on the black screen in the EVF and the rear LCD screen on my A7RII, when I closed the lens with the cap. When I opened the lens, the red dot disappeared.

It doesn't seems to be a pixel failure, because it is appears in both EVF and LCD screen. I updated the latest software version 3.20 without having any impact on the screens.

Any ideas what the reason could be?

Thanks in advance

If it's in BOTH viewing devices then it IS a pixel problem.

Frames of scenes where a somewhat dark portion of the

subject occupies the location of the red dot should also

exhibit the dot, on careful inspection. Most likely it would

show worse in high ISO exposures. Moderate ISO and

bright sections of a scene will tend to mask the problem.

The fix for this in Canon SLRs is well known, as Canons

re-map pixels during the manual cleaning function. Sonys

don't need the same type of manual cleaning function as

do SLRs.

There is some sort of "sensor lock" on a Sony to aid with

manual cleaning of the shifting sensor in Mark-II bodies.

I've never used that, never had hot pixels in a Sony, and I

don't know if it's what triggers re-mapping of pixels, but it

seems worth your while to research that.

Hot pixels tend to come back after a while, in exactly

the same place, cuz they are actually a "not-quite-flaw"

in the sensor itself. Long exposures and/or high ISO

shooting tend to re-provoke them.

A thing I learned about re-mapping when researching

for my Canon is something that is probably common

across all brands. The re-mapping action sees only

the more obvious hot pixels. You can make more of

your potential hot pixel sensor "flaws" bloom into the

"more obvious" category so that the re-mapping is as

through and as long lasting as possible.

You do everything you can to provoke all "flaws" to

"bloom" into visible hot pixels by:

Heating up the sensor by running it at least 10 to 20

minutes [set your power saver mode to 30 minutes].

Do this at maximum ISO. Then put on the lens cap

and shoot a dark frame at several seconds duration.

If you chimp that dark frame you should see more

hot pixels than you ever expected.

At this point, with the hot pixels maximally provoked,

do the re-mapping [date-time function with Sonys or

manual sensor clean function with Canons].

Just noticed the same thing yesterday on my A7rii and noticed that if I switch my AF on my lens off to MF the red dot changes to a red dash. I only see the dot in a low light situation.

Could this simply be an indication for AF vs MF?

What does it say about AF/MF indicators in the [RTF] Manual ?
