New Sony FE 50mm 1.8

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've been active on this forum for a couple of months now and this is my frist post. My name is Max and I come from the Netherlands.
Today I was very excited about the release of the NEW Sony 50mm 1.8 for my sony A7mii.

So I went to the shop to get the new lens I was waiting for quit a while. First I wanted to get the 55mm zeis but the 1000,- euro price tag made me think twice. So at the shop I put the lens om my a7mii and it was shit! the focus didn't work at all.

The shop called with Sony and they didn't have an asnwer why I didn't work, not on my camera nor other camera's like the A7Rmii.

I found a reaction on a Review on DPreviews and saw that you need to update your software to 3.1. So I did. After the update the lens worked but not as good as I thought it would. There was still a lot of hunting and it takes about a good second to focus. Very disappointing.

Do any of the users already got it and experience the same problems?

Cheers Max

ps. My english isn't perfect. I'm sorry if it reads a little funny :)

Your english is great.

Take it back to the shop and try all the other copies that they have until you find one with which you are happy. If there are none, demand your money back and think of another option.

Maybe a second hand 55?

If you want a cheap but really good manual option you'll get a pentax m 50 f1.7 for €20 and an adapter for the same amount!

All these threads are now full of complaints about quality control issues regarding sony lens manufacture and this causes great concern for those who have invested heavily in this camera system.

Thank you!

I've tested three copies in the shop and they where identical. Same speed same everything. In the end I didn't buy any of them so I don't have to worry about returning it. I was hoping one of you guys/girls would know what the problem is/was.

I've the metabones adapter and i've tested the canon 50mm 1.4. It was great during the day but in the evening it didn't stop hunting. Maybe now with the new software (3.1) I can give it a second go.

You may actually get LESS hunting from a slower lens.

In low level lighting, the lack of contrast [due to minimal

DoF of the faster lens] offers a less distinct target for

the AF to recognize and bring into focus.

OTOH the MetaBones won't ever match the AF speed

of a native lens-and-camera combination.

I'm considering the same thing. I only here positive things about the Zeis 55.

I've been working with the 50mm now for a couple of days and the still need to do a lot of work before this lens is "buyable"

I was waiting for this lens to come out due to the price point, but once I read the initial reviews about AF being slow and the motor also being slow, I decided to pull the trigger on a used 55 Zeiss. Never been happier.

I got it for a few days, so far it's pretty darn good wide open and i haven't updated anything yet (speaking of which i should check it out).

It hunts for focus a bit like the Canon 50mm f1.8 2nd gen, but smoother and quieter.  For its price, i can't be happier to have a everyday walk-around 50mm ( i prefer 50mm over 35mm).

I'm no professional and it does the job for me at this price tag- love the bokeh/ contrast and ease of use.

Probably you just got a bad one, would suggest a return for exchange.

I'm using the a7mii and needed to update before updating the firmware. Without the update the lens was pretty much useless.

Yesterday I shot a wedding with the 50 1.8 fe and I must say that the images are pretty good. Sadly I'm just not happy with the focus, a lot of times I was just a second to late with focussing to capture a moment. I'm going to give it a little more time to get used to but I'm still looking in to getting the Zeis 55.

Is f/w 3.10 on the A7R updated to include the new 50/1.8 FE lens?

I've tested 5 different lenses at 3 different shops and they behave all the same.

The reason for my question is that I believe the latest f/w for the A7R (not mark 2) is 3.10 and the release notes only mention the new GM lenses and not the new 50 (or 70-300 either).

I get it but i'm afraid that I won't be able to help you with that.

I received the 50/f1.8 yesterday, and will be returning it tomorrow. Focus hunts on A7R and it misses focus about 50% of the time. Seems it needs PDAF to work.  I was using flexible spot, medium, in bright sun. Using (or trying to) f11 was worse than f5.6.

YMMV, I hope it does!

    • Hello ! A friend gave me an old Sony SLT A65 that was locked in a suitcase for some years and guess what... It was pretty dirty. The translucent mirror looks strange. I know it's a pellicle mirror, but something is really weird , at least to me who never saw this entity before. It shows a rainbow pattern when lit, like a diffraction grid. And when I point the camera to a strong light source, let´s say streets lights or car lights, a huge halo and a diffuse pattern appears, almost like one of that photographic filters from the '70s. I guess the mirror is damaged. Does enyone have any experience with this ? I managed to remove the mirror and carefully rinse it with water and detergent solution , rinse again and dry, but the rainbow patter persists. My question is basically about the translucent mirror behavior with strong highlights and if the rainbow pattern on its surface is normal.   Thanks!
    • Sounds like you need a manual, and you are correct different settings can affect what you can do in the drive more.  Did you simple press the DRIVE button and select the THREE rectangles? There are several "burst" modes -- that you set with the Fn button or DRIVE button.  One takes several photos, when you press the button once (CONTINUOUS).  Another requires you to press the shutter button each time (SINGLE).  When you press the DRIVE button, what icon shows up -- a single rectangle or three?
    • If the 18-105 is too bulky, then so is the Tamron 17-70. Quality wise however, definately pick the Tamron over the Sony Zeiss 16-70, which is a compromised and dated design and similar in quality to the 18-105. I was in the same boat as you for a while (also had the 16-50 kit lens and 18-105 f/4), and went with the Sony 16-55 F/2.8 G. Happy with the choice as it's more compact than the Tamron 17-70 and vastly better quality than the Zony 16-70. In your case however, the omission of stabilized optics might be a dealbreaker. Did you consider the tiny but decent Sigma 18-50 f/2.8?
