Sigma ART + metabones autofocus

Just about to join the A7sii family and looking at getting a set of Sigma ART lenses (24-35mm, 50mm, 85mm) to be adapted via the metabones smart adapter. I'll mainly be using for portrait and event photography so really keen to hear if the auto focus is fast and reliable? Can anyone share their experience?

A7SII does not have phase-detect AF. Contrast-detect AF is slow. Only the A7II, A7RII and the upcoming A6300 had fast AF.

I am using the Sigma 24mm Art (Canon mount) with the Metabones IV on a Sony A7 mk II.  The focus is fast and accurate since the A7 firmware 2.0 update and Metabones IV firmware version 47 update.  Before the updates, theA7II  focus was really slow with the Sigma as well as my Canon 70-200 f4 L IS.  With the firmware updates the focus is as good and as fast with the A7ii  as on my old Canon 70D.  While adapted lenses work well on Sony A7 cameras, they do not have all the features of native Sony/Zeiss lenses.  The recent firmware updates have narrowed the gap between native and non-native lenses, but there are still compromises to features when using adapted lenses on the A7.

 

Another important factor is the weight.  The Sigma 24 Art + Metabone IV is really heavy.  If you load up the Sony A7 with a heavy lens and adapter, you may negate the advantages of mirrorless.  You will definitely notice the weight difference carrying this combo around at an event.  Check the specs carefully for the lenses and adapters you are considering.

 

Once my Zeiss Batis 25 arrives in a few weeks, I'll sell the Sigma Art.

If you can wait for Sigma's own MC-11 adapter that was just announced, my bet is Sigma's own adapter will work very well indeed with Sigma lenses and also with Canon's. Sigma has been reverse-engineering communication with Canon bodies for years.

 

There are some claims it is due out in April with a list price of $250, less than Metabones unless you get the Metabones as part of a package deal with the Sony body (there have been packages that included the Metabones IV at no extra cost). It will be interesting if the adapter provides eye-focus tracking at speeds approaching native Sony lenses. We shall see. It is also capable of firmware updates in the field using the same Sigma USB Dock used to update Sigma ART lenses.

The marketing blurb has one interesting point. The smarts in the adapter recognise sigma lenses. I wonder if that impacts non sigma canon ef mount lenses?

We will see what the sigma adapter does when it goes into the hands of users(I have pre-orderd from B&H) I personally do not care for the Metabones adapter since adapter# 3 binned the shutter on my A7R (internal short) I am currently using a Photodiox EF to sony E  and find that it works with my Canon L lenses(including 400/2.8 2 and 600/4.0) and especially with Zeiss classic manual focus.

hi friends i wanna buy a SONY ALPHA A7R2 but i have 2 sigma lens, Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 and The 10-20mm F4-5.6 with my canon 60d, the canon is not a full frame camera but the ALPHA A7R2 IS A FULL FRAME, wich kind of METABONE i must use? THANKS A LOT.

Buy the Sigma MC-11 EF to sony E adapter it is half the price of the metabones adapter and works as well or better with every canon mount lens that I have used it with especially with the sigma lenses.
