The Sony 85mm f1.4 GM thread

Recommended Posts

I figure this lens deserves it's own thread.

I personally have very high hopes.

It's going to have to be astonishingly good to oust my Canon 85mm f1.2 L II.

BUT: If it is, not just technically, but also in the "feel" of the images, which is borderline etherial with that particular Canon glass.

I'm in, all in, and will Sell my 6D+85L and not look back.

The only reason I have a Canon body at all is to shoot that lens natively. I'm not a DSLR guy, and I don't have a particular affinity towards Canon.

Sony, this is your moment..

Unless you need fast af or eye focus. I would stock work the 85mm canon easily. Don't upgrade just for the sake of it

I'm eagerly waiting for the 85GM, too.

It will make such a great pair with my 35/1.4. Two high quality primes with manual aperture control. Just what I wanted them to do (the aperture ring).

I'm glad they fixed the onion rings with a new aspherical process.

Now I hope reviews will come up in the next few days or weeks. So far we only saw some snapshots from that event.

I won't be upgrading just for the sake of it. The lens will need to be absolutely superb. But I have a feeling it just might be. We'll see.

My personal minimum requirement for it is world-class. It will need to be beyond good.

The aperture ring is a big plus for me too; and It should be safe to assume it will be a big improvement in focusing over the 6D+85L. Which is ok, but not great.

Plus it will allow me to get rid of a body. Somebody here is going to get a bargain on the lowest shutter-count mega portrait rig of all time if I can bring myself to sell it :-)

There are a number of compromises for me in the Canon 85L, but when I look at the files, the compromises fade into insignificance ..

Could you elaborate? Is this with the 35/1.4?

He is referring to the way the glass elements are made.  If you look at a 1:1 crop of bokeh light balls you will see rings like you sliced an onion in half.  This is caused by microscopic circular ridges on the glass element.  Sony has a new molded glass process that produces a significantly smoother surface and reduces these ridges reducing the onion ring effect.

thanks for the explanation!

Other than the 35/1.4, which other lenses is this prevalent on? All prior to the new G-master lenses?

Most lenses have the ridges.  It is expensive to polish them out to eliminate the rings, so it is often a sign of more expensive glass like Leica.  The Sony 55mm F/1.8 has the onion rings, but you really have to be looking for them or printing very large.
