Anyone having noise on FE 55mm?

My FE 55mm makes noise when changing aperture.

 

I also noticed that the aperture opens when focusing and makes lots of noise.

 

Is it normal?

I just returned a FE 28 f2 for the same issue you're describing.

I own the FE 1.8 / 55 mm ZA also.

The adjustment of the aperture is weak noticeable, but by no means to be described as noise.
NASA: If the sound in your copy should be extremely loud, so that's certainly not normal.

All of the auto-focus lenses make a little bit of noise when they focus, but not too much.  One thing to try is turning off Pre-AF in the menu, which basically keeps the lens focusing all the time and wastes battery in addition to making a some noise. But it really should be just minimally noticeable. If it's more than that, there may be a problem.  I had a similar issue with a Sigma lens having a squeaking sound on AF, and they changed the focus motor. Maybe your lens needs repair.

Hi, I added a video clip to demonstrate it.

 

I am not sure if it is normal since a discussion at dpreview believed it is normal.

 

I also find that in video mode, all noise disappears.

That seems much louder than mine. Mine makes a little noise when changing aperture but not like that.

It is normal. It's not so loud (videos from smartphones tend to gain the general volume and sounds) and you can deactivate it simply going to  the right menu voice. I attach this screenshot from my Sony A7RII in Italian (sorry) but you can see the numbers and find your way.

It isn't PRE AF. Is called something "viewfinder effects" and it's the preview of the shots that you can see in your EVF/LCD (exposure).

Hey OP, wondering if you ever found out what the issue was with the noise coming from the 55F1.8 lens.

I have the same issue as you described and also posted on the video link. Its ever so slightly sounds like a small grinding/racking noise coming from the aperture blades.

I might bring my camera in to the local Sony Service Center and see what they have to say. Will report back.

The noise should not be that noticeable. I had to return my first one due to the noise as described. The second one is fine, going on 5 months.

No, not dead quiet. Sounds similar to your video, perhaps a little quieter. The first copy I had was very noisy, especially when the autofocus was trying to lock on (A mode), and also powering on/off.

 

Keep in mind that wide open, the aperture does not move when focus locking, and when stopped down, the noise you hear is the aperture moving to the respective f number. So the more prolonged aperture blade noise when stopped down. 

 

Also, there is a difference whether you are using the EVF or LCD. When using the LCD, the aperture does a "step" movement to stop down to the set f number. Doesn't happen at 1.8. 

 

I would still have it looked at. I hope this helps.

I have this problem. Awfulmif it's "normal" . Sounds (no pun intended) like a design flaw. Disappointed given the price!
