Sony A7R2 "Camera error turn power off then on"

Recommended Posts

Sorry to start my first post with this issue. but...it's my first expensive camera so ...I would like to understand.

Sometimes...(at now only twice) I encounter this message "Camera error turn power off then on""

I can't replicate it...but i remember the scenario:

1. low charge battery (15-18%)

2. camera off

3. I turn on

4. I press rapidly focus (i set custom button af on AF/MF button)

5. ...and.. Camera display "error turn power off then on"

then.. I did. I switch off...and after few seconds ..turn on..and everything goes well. no error.

I don't know if it's a battery problem  ( I say this because with one battery (always original) i take a lot of pics..with another less

consideration:

I never seen this problem with firmware 1.0 and 28mm or 16-35

I encounter this problem only with firmware 2.0 and 55 1.8

what do you think ? thanks

I agree. That's not a helpful message. I have the same problem but  a slightly different scenario.  I bought my A7RII on Ebay. It was purchased August 1, 2016 and I bought it in the middle of September. Barely a month old.

Mine happened when I tried to take pictures quickly. It was still set to single picture but when I took several pictures quickly my camera locked up and gave me that message.

Turning it off and back on didn't make any difference. I took the battery out, put it back in, the message displays immediately.

When it did finally come back on without the error, one picture and it locked up again with the error.

One time when it did come back on I changed it to silent shutter and it worked better. I found a number of posts where people said "Bump" the camera and it will fix the problem. My problem wasn't an isolated issue,  Apparently, this has been a problem with the A7 series for a while.

I sent to Precision Camera as per Sony's service instructions (which cost nearly $50 with insurance) and a week later I received the camera back from repair.

Took the camera outside, took a few pictures and it seemed to work.  The I took about 5 pictures quickly and it locked up again with the same error "Camera error:...."

Called Sony and demanded a replacement. The senior service rep explained that their warranty doesn't offer repairs. I have no other option but to send it back to Precision Camera repair and let them try again. I did get Sony to send me a shipping label and pay for the shipping and take responsibility for the camera when I hand it over to Fedex.

This has been a very disappointing experience with Sony and the A7RII. I have been using the Sony NEX 5N, NEX 6 and the A6000 and had been considering the purchase of one of the A7 series for over a year. I've used Nikon starting with the F100,  D70, D200, D3, and D7000. I've never had a single problem with any of those cameras. If the A7RII comes back working like it should and isn't a lemon, maybe I'll feel differently about Sony.

I suggest you contact Sony and get it repaired. Turning it off and on may not continue working.

Hi, I shoot for a living and started shooting with the a7ii and a7Rii after using Canons for years. I dont want to bash the a7Rii because I love the results I am getting, but I had the same error message while shooting a bride walking down the aisle.  Thankfully I shoot with two cameras because it would not function at all.  It went in for repair and came back only to brick itself 8 weeks later, again while shooting a wedding. This time it went from working perfectly one second to being completely dead with no warning at all. I have searched to find if anyone else has had this happen to them but nothing came up so I am thinking I have a dud. Sony can't, won't do anything yet because it happened inside the repairers warranty period so I have to wait and see if it is fixable. I'm hoping it is a write off so I can get a new one.

This whole episode has really shaken my confidence in Sony cameras.
