What you see here is a new patent from Sony disclosing a sensor capable of per-pixel-shutter. It means every pixel takes the light that is needed. So no mre dark areas or highlight clipping on future Sony sensors!

Here is the pdf file of the patent:

Maybe we have to part with the old idea, that a picture is taken by exposing a sensor over a predefined time.
The key feature is to give up the mechanical shutter.
Having done this, you can do things like described in this patent (it's brilliant).

But, as soon as you can realize continuous capturing (like the A7-S already does), you could record a video over the exposure time.
And add from the single frames just the light amount needed to build a final image - the amount of the HDR effect is variable.
Or video during focusing, and select the really sharp frame.
Or video and take that frame, where the person is smiling nicely.
Or video and merge sharp parts of different frames.
Or video and identify objects resp. their outlines to combine them into a common picture.
To reduce motion blurring, or to realize steadyshot without moving parts.

The way we take photos will go on to change.
At the moment Sony is the only company, who seems to have the technical strength for such innovations.
I feel, I've invested in the right system :))
