Hello from Phase One (Capture One Pro and Express for Sony)

Recommended Posts

Hi Forum,

Please allow me to introduce myself.

My name is David and I work for Phase One in the Capture One department.

If you have watched any of the tutorials here...

Or here...

Then that's me.

Equally I run our weekly webinar program and the calendar for that is placed here...

I wanted to drop in and specifically mention the webinars as next week we have one dedicated to tethering with Capture One and Sony in conjunction with Tether Tools (http://www.tethertools.com) See attached image for inspiration!  (Copyright Anders Espersen)

Hopefully I will see some of you there.

If you have yet to try Capture One, then don't forget there is a 60 day trial, where you can evaluate the Express and Pro versions.  As mentioned earlier on this forum to upgrade from express to Pro is only 30USD.

I will try to keep an eye on this forums (and other Sony forums) to answer any questions that may pop up!

Many Thanks,

David

Capture One. It is certainly the best Fuji X RAW converter by quite a bit. I also like how it's laid out and works.

Hoping my a7R is as well handled as I bought 8 just a few days ago as an upgrade to my 7 install. Yeah I know, there is a Sony version.

Hey David,

good to have you here. I'm using Capture One as my main RAW converter only for a year or so now, but after comparing it to Aperture 3.5, I was shocked ad how much more Capture One could do with my photos. Awesome software. As a RAW converter, that is. I'm not a big fan of how the asset management works, so I'm still using Aperture for that, by importing TIFFs of photos developed in CO. Not the best solution, but hopefully that situation changes in the future.

HI Poki,

I am glad you are having a positive experience!  Maybe some of the past webinars can help you with asset management?  It is not too dissimilar to what Aperture was offering and has matured much more in version 8?

I purchased Capture pro * but It tells me I can't have live view with my sony A7r: Did I buy the wrong version?

HI Austrokiwi,

No, you haven't bought the wrong version.

We have seen some inconsistency with Live View and the A7r depending on what firmware you are running, so we have asked Sony for clarification.

I should emphasise that Live View functionality is only possible if it is enabled in the camera firmware, so we have no control over wether it works or not!

Hi David, I too am using CO pro for a less than a year, and quite happy.

I use Canon 6D and Sony a6000.

When shooting tethered CO will often loose the connection to the camera after a minute or more of non-use, and reconnecting the camera will just freeze the system. This happens consistently with my canon during my portrait session, very frustrating as I need to force kill the program and disconnect camera, start program and reconnect camera for it to work again. (does not look good in front of the client)

However, I have yet to try the Sony a6000 tethered, so will give that a try this weekend. :)

The sony a6000 is my backup camera, but get a lot more love outside the studio than my Canon. :D

I would also love to see the "Edit With..." option with export for PSD and not Tiff.

But despite that issues I have, I dont see myself going back to Aperture or Lightroom again  ;)

Hi Gauban,

With the Canon I would look at a number of things..

1) Does it have the latest firmware (Canon only test their SDK releases with the latest firmware versions

2) Have you tried a different USB cable?  Does it confirm to USB length specs

3) Try a powered USB hub

There should be no need to experience disconnects, so it can be fixed.  Open a support case with us if need be.

I have shot tethered with the a6000 and it worked nicely!

Glad to have you onboard.  :)

  • 1 month later...

Hello,

After using Aperture for a number of years ... I apparently need to find a replacement. I've spent the last few weeks with a new A7II, crappy weather and an evaluation copy of Lightroom 5 and Capture One Pro 8. They are both a significant improvement over Aperture and both more or less the same. Adobe Cloud is a significant negative. I've had enough experience of "following the trend with Apple" to realise that Lightroom has significant potential to waste my time in the future .... and there seems to be an increasingly long line of people who want to take 10€ out of my bank account each month no matter what they are offering

For me this is all a hobby ... so Capture One Pro (for Sony) at 30€ is really hitting the sweet spot ... except ... I own a few other cameras and they are not from Sony. That means I need the Pro edition, right? Its twice the price of Lightroom 5. Well, thats some feedback ... The software looks great, but its a big jump from 30€ to 250€(or is it 300) for Pro features that I don't really need (perhaps the Grain is interesting).

Thanks, Tim.

Actually, its 206 + 41 tax for a total of 247€, meanwhile Lightroom is costing 114€. I found that I could not edit raw files from non Sony cameras (Ricoh and Fuji) with the Sony edition - IIRC Sony did buy Minolta which might explain why the 5D works?

In any case, I have been using the evaluation version and thanks to your helpful tutorials I have a working solution to the biggest problem - organizing photos by Year and Month. Thank you!

My personal opinion is that Capture One is working a little better than Lightroom, and the Interface is much less cluttered. Not having the constantly annoying references to the Adobe Cloud is also welcome. If there were a non Pro version, sans tethering for instance, then probably I would already buy it ... but instead I'm just going to wait a little longer. I don't think I consider Lightroom anymore - Adobe software is generally a PITA.

Hi David,

again to the topic "Tethering".

I experience a big confusion, while looking for the right A7*-Camera to be able to photogaphe with tethering-functions and C1pro8.

Sony-support tells me, tethering is not working with A7 and A7r.

On the page of PhaseOne is written: For A7 and A7r: "tethering"; For A7II and A7s: "tethering with LiveView";

How can this be understood?

As I understand it (haven't shot my A7 tethered as I only have a desktop computer and nothing really to photograph nearby), with A7 and A7r you can control shooting setting and release the shutter from the computer and the photo taken will be shown on Capture One.

With A7s and A7mk2, you also get live view, that is, you can view the framing live in Capture One without having to release the shutter to take a photograph.

David from PhaseOne has not answered yet, but I think you did not understand it right.

How should you change the settings of the camera or release the shutter, as you do not get a picture on your computer-screen with A7 or A7R while intending to do a shoot with the camera. With A7 or A7r you can only control a picture after shooting it.

Hi David ,

Hope you can help me out here / or someone who knows the program well. I have used capture one express sony for both my macbook air and my new windows 8.1 custom pc. My macbook runs capture one well and it hasn't crashed yet, and its an old macbook air 13 inch 2011 version.

My pc on the other hand is >

intel i74790k

16gbram

240gb ssd, and an old 240 gb hd drive from my xbox

no videocard

windows 8.1

I notice when importing files from my a6000, like 500 raw images that it takes so slow to import , or maybe it's just how it is. When I open capture one again the program freezes, not sure what's causing the problem ?

Is there any way to reset capture one?

Do I need more memory card ?

I don't have a videocard yet, so maybe it could help ?

Just did a quick test with tethering as I got back home - and it works with A7 as I had anticipated, you can change aperture/shutter/ISO from the computer, but only get image transferred, when you take a photo (you don't have live view for framing/changing settings)

Ok, but makes this sense?

Why should I change the settings of a camera via computer, when I can not see the picture I want to do at the same time on the computer-screen.

Would it kill you guys to have C1 do a space check on it's logs and databse before importing a pile of pictures.. It's not much fun when that runs out of space. I always have room for the pictures.

It's not well handled and popping up endless error messages for each unhandled instance is brain dead.

I sure wish spell check worked here. I like my robot editor.

Hi, David,

Nice to see you here. I am another happy C1 camper. I was on LightRoom, and seriously disgusted with the way Adove went about trying to force Photoshop users to the rental-only version, and God help you if you stop paying every month, so I looked for an alternative. And, to my delight, not only do I no longer have anything to fear from Adobe, but C1 shocked me in how much better it is than LightRooom. I wrote 2 posts on my blog comparing the 2, and got lots of feedback.

Now, a new LightRoom is coming out, with the ability to handle multiple pictures for HDR and panoramas. That's great news, because it tells me that you aren't going to let them have that advantage for long, and that was my n°1 wish from C1.

Again, congrats and thanks on a job well done!

I can definitely recommend Capture One, especially since I switched completely from Lightroom to Capture One. Just having native tethering alone for Sony full-frames like my a7R is invaluable. Skin tone rendering is also much better with Capture One.

By the way, there is a 10% off coupon for buying and upgrading to Capture One: AMBJOE

Where are you storing your catalog?

The old Xbox HDD is going to be REAL slow...

    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
