sensor cleaner

Recommended Posts

Had a big grundle on A7M2 images that

would not dislodge using the in-camera

cleaning function, nor with my crummy

blower. I cleaned it off with just a dry

cotton swab.

[GRUNDLE, about 60 pixels long]

You can see by its shape that it's

not a grease spot or such, but is a

fibre or small dust item ... IOW it's

something that you'd expect could

blown off but refuse to budge. The

main thing is that it's not a GLOB

of stuff that would smear when

moved with a cotton swab.

i use a blower and for the rest a dry

cotton swab and again the blower 99% of the time

if there is some rest of dirt i use isopropanol and

a cotton swab, but the isopropanol must be very clean and not to much !

use the wet cotton swab only once than a new one, eventually dry the sensor wit a dry

cotton swab but you have to be very fast..... and again the blower

I use a blower rubber ball. (no brush!)

When dust really doesn't come off i use an old really small brush with old bent long soft hairs. I make sure it is not greasy by wash it with soap, really make sure with water there is no soap left. Then i dry it, and with a hairdryer/blower I heat it so it is soft and really dry and no grease.

Do Not touch with the hands. And then with the brush really carefull touch the spot where the dirt is.

Then blow with the rubber ball again.

It helped me 5 years already.

Mostly blowing with the rubber ball. Brush mostly not directly needed. Little dust almost dont appear under F10 or so.

90% of the time a rubber blower is enough. If not, then a dry soft brush which I keep in the original box it came in to make sure it doesn't get dirty or greasy. Never in the 8 years I've been cleaning sensors have I had to use anything stronger than a dry cotton swab. The trick is to remove any dust or dirt as soon as possible. Don't give it time to stick permanently to the sensor.

I use the "Visible Dust" system filtered blower 7X loupe arctic butterfly square stickey silicon picker upper for corners etc. I try not to use wet cleaners or swabs unless absolutely necessary. Rodger Cicala of Lens Rental dot com has an excellent video up on the lens rental site showing how his pro techs actuallly clean camera sensors in a step by step explained fashion.
