Uncompressed hdmi output to Prores - isn't that a significant advantage? Still 8 bit however. And the Star might be the way to go on that basis.

The Shogun plus the A7s is possibly a better option than A7r2 for 4k so external recorders certainly retain a role I think.

Arguably SSD is a better option than SDXC - cheap and high capacity. But with obvious size disadvantages too. Plus the larger monitor is an advantage in some circumstances.

I think we'll see external recorders for a while...

Nice little review!

You make some really good points. I just really wonder how many will put out the money for an external monitor for an a7sii. 4k will definitely help ensure the externals hand around but the 1080 models are approaching end of life in my opinion.

I did miss the single biggest advantage. I can record longer than 29:59! Not sure how I missed it.

Uncompressed hdmi to prores is nice but takes up way more space. I like how much faster I can render in and out using pro res vs a avchd for example, but it's a size vs end goal.

For me, avchd is good enough. For others, I could see how there are advantages.

Thanks for the input!

Not entirely convinced I want to write this and I might change my mind.... But I think I prefer high quality HD footage (raw/Prores) rather than highly compressed 4k xavcs.

Totally unscientific and to some extent based on ease of distribution (albeit 4k is nice for the crop factor).

Thoughts?!

Today I am right there with you. 1080 is nice and manageable, even if I have to upload via my iPhone or at work due to my slow home DSL. 4k today looks great but how many have a 4k monitor? Three years from now, I know we will be saying something different and I will have a Sony a7ii that is not 4k capable.
