Zeiss Loxia 50mm Focus Ring

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys,

I just bought a7s with Loxia 50mm, moving to Sony, yay!

The focus ring on my Loxia makes a little sound like two metals touching,

it is smooth from the beginning, a bit heavy on the middle, then again smooth till infinity.

The sound is biggest when I focus in the middle.

Is this normal for this lens or should I get it checked?

I've used manual vintage lenses before this, and never got this sound.

That's why I'm worried.

P.S.

The sound is nothing notable, but when you put it to your ear you can hear it clearly.

Cheers

zdravkovski, what did the store say? I'm asking because I'm thinking of having my 50mm Loxia checked up as well. But I bought it online, so it's a bit of a hassle... bleh.

Same as you, I bought it online... Today they should be receiveing it.

I'll let you know as soon as I get news.

These guys are unbelievable, look what they said:

"

We have tested the lens, and we cannot fault this at all. We will still replace this regardless, and we will ship the new out on Monday. The box you returned to us was torn, so we will put the new lens in the box you sent.  "

In the meantime I contacted Zeiss( directly in Germany), I contacted Sony, and all of you guys said that there is no sound from the lens whatsoever.
And these guys say that after all of this ? I've never had experience such as this, worst customer service ever.
If the lens is okay, why are they replacing it? Since they are so sure, maybe it's better to send me back the first one, right ?

I also took pictures of the box before sending, there was no damage on the box,
and I shipped it exactly as they advised.( I asked them 3 times about shipping )

Background story:  With the lens, I bought a7s, H6, Rode NTG, Filters and Cards, (around $5000 cost)
And they won't even replace my lens which is non-arguably faulty?

Btw, the a7s has a slight dent at the bottom, nothing to worry about, but still. It has a dent!
I know I can't argue about it with these guys, since they won't acknowledge this, there are
no chances to acknowledge the dent. (The dent is painted over, which means it's a factory fault)

The store is  Leederville Cameras, located in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Their site is  leedervillecameras.com.au.

DO NOT BUY FROM HERE, NO MATTER THE PRICE. IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

(I'm not sorry for caps).
Now, let me write some "great" reviews on yelp, google, facebook and wherever I can. So people can know about my whole case.
Sorry for the long post, I just hope nobody else experiences this from them.

Any advice on what should I do? I'm located in Sydney, Australia.
I'm thinking of calling fair trading about this case.

P.S.

I'll post my review later, so it gets maximum readability.

So they are replacing the lens afterall? Thats what your post says? Shipping a new one out on monday? But in the old box, thats what it say no?

The dent in the bottom of a7s is un forgiveable, that should definately be returned and replaced, why dont you take it to sony in sydney?

This is the huge problem ordering online from interstate or overseas, you are basically at there mercy, i even got Ripped from a local store in melbourne a while ago, so they all do it, but some it happens by pure accident, others, hmmm, now when i buy stuff, i open it in the shop or in my car and check, and i dont buy online much except for small cheap stuff mainly, unless they are pretty reputable business.

I feel very sorry for you, p.s. i was considering pre ordering a7r2 from Leaderville as they have the best price.

They will replace it, but why would they lie about the box? Also, if they are sending a new one, why aren't they sending it as it comes but they are sending it in the old box?

Since they're going to get a credit for this lens from Zeiss, that should be no problem.

It doesn't make sense.

I'll probably get some demo lens or something...

I contacted Sony 4 times, and I'm still waiting on them to respond... What a rubbish customer support.

About the a7R mkII, I too was thinking about ordering that one. But I needed audio equipment, that's why I went with the a7s.

After all of this that happened to me, I would never buy again from these guys. But, they got 4 star rating.

And maybe this only happened to me and no one else ?

I'm tired of arguing about this, I decided to take the "new" lens they'll be sending me and settle.

This has been the worst buying experience in my life.

I would advise not to buy the A7R mkII from them, I think there are some other stores that will match that price.

I think camerapro are their main rival ?

Forget the 400 aud, the best way is to buy from bhphotovideo/adorama and be sure that they'll give you the best service you can get.

Or if you do pre-order it, make sure you get it in the store. Open it and give it a detailed check in front of them.

Good Luck, I think the a7r II will be the best hybrid camera and it will surely last the next 3-5 years at the top.

Cheers it was good to hear your experience before considering purchase, do you have the serial number of your old zeiss btw?

Just to check if they dont pull a fast one on you, and the box question is very odd, maybe you should insist on an un opened box, did you send them copies of the photo of the box too? always document everything, i do, it sounds like there sending you a demo lens, pity you dont know someone in w.a. to go in the store, ive heard they are a big chain camera store too not some small outfit, be damned if il pay more then 3770 though for a7r2, even that is a lot, maybe il wait anyways , or just lay buy, if i got a new camera with ANY BLEMISH WHATSOEVER, i would be returning absolutely.

I bought a fuji lens from digidirect with xe-1 few yrs ago, it had a bubble in it that showed up in photos, they had put it in the box with my xe-1 as the box was opened when i purchased it and the salesman opened it in front of to me "show" me, but later i realised that was how he fooled me, he should have sold it "unopened" and he must have put the dodgy lens in with the camera, it was sold as a bundle, the last one they had too, supposedly, it was dodgy, the lens was not quite "new", bastards.

p.s. With Adoramas and B&Hphoto etc, do we have to pay import tax if cost is over 1 grands?

I got my a72 from camera pro, great price, much cheaper then digidirect, or any other store, perfect unopened condition, came in 7 days, they were honest with me too, it went out of stock after i paid for it, but they didnt lie, so i was fine waiting a bit longer.

I will buy from them again, there prices are great on most things too.

Im really glad you posted this info, i will go local and price match or wait.

I would be ringing them up, and telling them YOU GET ME 1 NEW ZEISS 50 IN THE MAIL BY THE END OF TODAY OR I WILL BE ON THE FIRST FLIGHT OUT TO PAY YOU A VISIT. and that you will arrive at the busiest time and make a big scene!!!

I would be ringing sony australia too and telling them your new camera has a dint and you want a brand new replacement asap, that if they dont [or leederville if thats who you have to go through for defects/returns/warranty etc] you will be charging them for the money your loosing as your job  as a paid photographer. bluff them with everything you got, ombudsman, consumer affairs, solicitor, whatever is best strategy, make a list.

never be threatening, be completely cool calm and collected but very serious and matter of fact, you have the right as an australian consumer to return for complete refund or replacement if the equipment is not 100%. and that is the law here, thank god.

dont take it, insist.

This makes me feel sick this crap. Cos its happened to me several times.

If theres one thing i cannot stand is cunning dishonesty.

We already pay disgustingly overpriced gouging $$$ here for electronics, much more then most places in the world.

@foto-fanatic, it seems that we're the same blood type:

Always make the wrong choice, and rant two days about it.

I'm glad it helped you, I'll make sure my experience goes as wide as possible.

The camera  will have to be analyzed by professionals, and even if I went with that case, I'm in Australia until

August 23th and after that long gone from here. So I can't risk losing anymore time and nerves.

I contacted Sony Australia about the camera though, they seem pretty indifferent to me. They've opened the case

but it's taking too long if you ask me...

Anyway, I just want this nightmare to finish and be done with it. It was a "good" lesson and I learnt it the hard way.

Always buy from known sellers and if possible at the store!  ( or pay the IRON price if need be :D)

I am not sure about the import tax and how it works, but it should be possible to order I think.

If not else, a trip to the US will suit you really good.

I was thinking between CameraPro and these guys, and as always I went with the wrong choice.

But as chain of stores they seemed more reliable, NOT.

Anyway, if you're not in a hassle. It might be best to wait for the second batch of a7r II. The first are always with some small imperfections.

As one guy said: " Don't be the fool they test the equipment on, and don't be the fool who buys the last item of the shelf."

I know this is off topic, but if you're going to buy the a7rII for photography. Consider the Nikon D810 with the reasonably priced Sigma Art series.

They give off Zeiss like quality, for a fraction of the price.

And if you're buying it for the video abilities, consider the FS7. A little pricier than the a7r II. But sure worth every penny.

My opinion about the a7r II? It should be the perfect hybrid camera yet.

But still, since your choices are either pay 4400 and be sure, or 3770 and live in fear of fraud.

I would advise to wait and see what Sony brings, after all 5D mk IV should come this September.

Thanks for all your support , everyone's been helpful.

Hope you'll all learn from my mistakes. Or should I say from my rotten luck?

I will wait, good advice, funny you mention the nik 810 too lol, you read my mind.

You could always box up and sell it, cut few hundred losses? I wish there was something i could do to help you.

Is the sony working ok/ I suppose if its only something very minor, could live with that, nikon had probs too remember, oil spots, crappy shutter mecs, flare, etc etc, q/c can affect even leicas.

I prey the new lens you get is great, if not sell it for a bit less, save up, and buy the batis anyways, ah these corporations, pfffft.and shops, so much for online shopping, im always sceptical,

When i bought a7m2 from campro, i emailed them first and told the sales guy, im buying a7 and 3 new lenses, but was ordering a72 and 3 weeks later the zoom first to see how it went, that was the lure for a straight deal, the promise of more business in future.

I've seen what can do that bad boy, and I highly recommend it.

(if not D810, then go for D750 it's like this: https://media.giphy.com/media/lXiRD6COxDO7BOKTm/giphy.gif )

I hate selling my gear, I'm usually pretty attached to it. Even to the small parts.(not a smart thing probably)

Yeah, that was good idea. But still, even if you don't intend to buy in near future from a store, they shouldn't scam you.

Good luck with your choice.
