Fighting compression on the A7R

Recommended Posts

Someone please guide me in the right direction. Facebook and Flickr compresses sony full frame images way more then any full frame I've ever touched. They put a black cast and pixelation over pretty much every photo I post with any darkness in it. I know facebook always compresses images but why is it worse for sony?

Yes I've tried adjusting the size of the image to suggested fb sizes as many tutorials show and it works with other cams but not sony.

Flickr makes my images look horrible too, yet I can open an email with the photo and it looks way better on the same monitor

I'd like to showcase my work to clients but I feel it's losing me business.

I've tried everything I've seen online and I'm wondering if anyone can help.

they always look like this but when I print or view on computer they look fine

I post pictures off the Sony A7R, A7S and A7 II to Google+, Flickr, Facebook and a number of other sites/forums with no major problems.  Not too sure why you would be having problems.  I also post pictures off Canon cameras; no real difference between Canon and Sony that I can see?  A sample Sony A7 II picture:

What is the format of the pictures you're posting?  I stick to high quality JPG.

Flickr has hundreds of Sony-only communities with people posting beautiful photos. It's not Flickr.

So we're going to need more details about your workflow.

- shooting raw or jpeg?  camera settings?

- editing software?

- jpeg viewer?

Post your before and after shots to a generic file sharing site like dropbox. You can even zip them so you know they're not going through any kind of conversion on upload.

Sony's "14 bit" is actually 11+7 lossy compression. The Sony file has less than 10% of the discreet color values as a Nikon file.  When you start with less you end with less.

You get banding, posterization, reduced shadow recovery and artifact creation with the Sony files.

Sony says they're going to fix this but I'm not holding breath.  It took them almost 3 years to acknowledge it as an issue.

Plenty more here -

My advice - cut your losses ASAP.  The wasted time and images are really the greatest expense.

Having a bad Sunday, are we!?

I nice line of B.S., but you're so far from correct as to be totally laughable!

On top of the Sony issues - more than likely you have a number of other problems now that I see your file.

Are you using ETTR technique ?

Are you using the widest colorspace from capture to output ?

Are you processing on a wide gamut color corrected monitor ?

Again, even if you're doing all of this right, Sony's 11+7 bit compression WILL ALWAYS PREVENT you from getting the dynamic range and discrete color values you need.

I often process single Nikon 14 bit files that has Sony users guess that it's an HDR file.

Never heard that when I was using the A7r and doing everything right.

Thread Jack much? This is clearly not the OP's issue. If it were he would see it on his local files. Please be respectful and helpful. If you want to rant about this issue start your own thread.

    • I recently got an a7cii and to pair with the compact body, I thought of getting 2 of the trio compact lenses, 24mm F2.8 and 40mm F4.0. (I already have a 70-200mm) However I stumbled upon the newly released 24-50mm F2.8 G. I'm not sure which to get - I like the small factor of the prime lenses ON the body because it's discreet and helps me blend in as an average tourist / doesn't make it obvious when doing street. But if I add the dimensions of the 2 primes together, it takes up more space in the bag than the zoom lens. BUT THEN, the weight of the 2 prime lenses is 110g lesser than the zoom lens. The zoom lens has the added benefit of being more versatile.   So now I'm stumped. Each has their pros and cons and I can't decide which to get. I'd like to hear the views of you guys who are more experts at this.   Edit: I'm a bit concerned about weight because the last time I went overseas my shoulders were aching from carrying too much. Which is why I was looking for small compact primes in the first place.
    • Hi, I have got a6300 which shutter stopped working. I managed to change shutter but unfortunatelly broke shutter motor tape but I fixed that. After repair the shutter is working but not in a proper way, watch with sound. I bought the second shutter and tried to test it before dissaembling again and it doesn't react to magnet but it works fine when I apply 3V. Are there different type of shutter for a6000 - a6400? Back to the question what is wrong with my shutter after first repair? I don't want to put next shutter unfoundedly. Do your sony cameras perform such a self-check after start up?  IMG_5579 (1).webm
